As soon as I step inside the yard of Vilhelmsro Farm, I realise that I have found a very special place. Only a stone’s throw from Falköping town centre (in Västergötland) with its hustle and bustle there is a café unlike any other.
The farmhouse, which dates back to the 1800s, has been restored and at the centre of the yard is now a lovely conservatory with an open fire and cosy groups of tables and chairs, decorated with delicate tablecloths and flowers from the garden. I look around and discover more places to sit in the newly renovated stable, with an interior that makes you want to spend hours enjoying a nice cup of coffee and home-baked cakes.
I have difficulty deciding where to sit, so instead follow the scent of waffles and freshly brewed coffee to the heart of the farm – the café counter. Chocolate cake, cinnamon buns, waffles, nutty biscuits…. I have found heaven on earth!
‘What can I get you?’ asks a pretty girl behind the counter.
‘I can’t make my mind up’, I answer, wishing I could try a piece of everything. ‘What do you recommend?’
‘Our speciality is ‘stick waffle’, a slightly thicker waffle in Belgian style, but baked on a stick. We serve it with a dollop of cream and jam. But my personal favourite is probably the rhubarb cake, made with rhubarb from our own garden. It doesn’t get more locally produced than that. We try to use locally produced and organic ingredients as much as possible’, the waitress proudly explains.
I finally settle for a piece of chocolate cake with whipped cream and a cup of coffee. I take my cake out into the yard and decide to sit outside, beneath a large oak tree. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and I feel a sudden sense of calm. It is hard to take in that I am still right in the middle of a town. After a short while, the waitress brings my coffee. She tells me that it is from Da Matteo, a company that strives to use fair production methods at each step. ‘It’s also very tasty’, she adds with a smile!
‘Thank you so much’, I say, and take the opportunity to enquire about a comfortable place to stay within the local area.
‘That’s funny’, exclaims the waitress, who by now has introduced herself as Martina, part-owner of the farm. ‘We have only just opened a B&B here on the farm. We still have some vacancies for this evening, when there will be a beer tasting session in the conservatory that I am sure you’ll enjoy.’
‘Perfect’, I say, and lean back to enjoy the best chocolate cake I’ve had in a long time. ‘I like it here!’
