Throughout this article Katie Watson from Off the Map Travel shows you ways to combine the Christmas City of Gothenburg with activities in the wonderful winter landscape of Dalsland.
Gothenburg in West Sweden is full of festivities throughout November and December and it is a fabulous city to visit and experience in the run up to Christmas to enjoy some traditional foods, concerts and activities. Here at Off the Map Travel we wanted to give our customers the chance to enjoy this experience but also really get to know the beauty and nature that rural west Sweden has to offer!
A day in rural Dalsland offers such a great contrast to time in the city that you will feel like you have had two breaks in one! This is what you can expect on your day in Sweden’s ‘Lake District’ of Dalsland:
Starting early to make the most of your day you will be picked up from your central Gothenburg hotel and will enjoy the drive from the city, leaving behind the whirlwind of noise and hustle and bustle. Slowly you will feel yourself unwinding as the journey passes stunning lakes and forests and slowly becomes more remote and scenic. By the time you arrive at your destination you will be ready for traditional Swedish Fika (coffee and cake) to prepare you for your day of winter activity!
Having refueled you will now be ready for your first taste of Swedish nature. Snow falls for the first time at different points each year so although you are not guaranteed snow and ice you are guaranteed beautiful surroundings and a connection with the wild. Here at Off the Map Travel it is this peace and wilderness that West Sweden offers that makes us love the area so much. Depending on the weather conditions you will be able to enjoy a variety of fun activities including ice skating on the lake, horse and sledge trips, ice fishing and high rope adventures.
After all this activity you will now be ready for lunch. Local and traditional food will be served throughout the day and lunch will hopefully include wild game. After enjoying this meal it is time to head back to the wilderness for an afternoon of further activities.
As early evening draws in it is time to return to the cosy main building, change your clothes and enjoy a traditional hot Christmas drink and then fill yourself (if you still have room!) with a delicious Swedish Julbord, Christmas buffet. The food in Dalsland is something that always surprises and thrills us with it delicious flavors made using local produce, it is far from the food you would be offered on an activity day in the UK!
After a day in the wilderness it will be time to head back to your city centre hotel. After all the activity, fresh air and good food you are sure to have a good nights sleep!
